A volcanic archipelago of 20 islands west of Viti Levu and south of the Yasawa Islands, the Mamanuca (pronounced Ma-ma-noo-tha) Islands are mostly islets rather than full sized islands. Indeed some of them even disappear below the Pacific Ocean at high tide. One of the main attractions for the Mamanuca’s is gorgeous tropical islands in relatively close proximity to mainland Viti Levu.
Easily accessible by boat from Port Denarau Marina, it’s also a short seaplane flight to Mamanuca Island resorts. Protected from ocean swells by the Malolo Barrier Reef, islands in the Mamanucas match the idyllic Fiji holiday experience many dream about, including Fiji’s only overwater bures at Likuliku Island Resort. Fiji weddings are popular in the Mamanucas thanks to a splendid choice of resort accommodation and wedding organisers skilled in meticulous arrangements that weddings require. The Mamanucas regularly appear in wedding albums worldwide. Soft white sand beaches shaded by coconut palms swaying in frangipani-scented trade wind breezes. Turquoise waters lap the shore beneath a warm tropical sun. The traditional Fijian greeting of Bula (meaning hello) rings out across the islands where locals live much as they’ve always done in traditional villages alongside resorts that range from budget through to luxury.
The offshore Malolo Barrier Reef lures scuba divers to her colourful coral-strewn treasures while snorkelers hover above kaleidoscopic marine fish that drift amidst soft corals dancing in the current. Sailors too find safe have anchorages amongst the reef with Musket Cove Resort on Malolo Lailai and nearby Plantation Island welcoming crews to drop anchor or take a berth in the marina. With large fleets of yachts in the bay, the atmosphere is festive, friendly ‘and shoes off’ good fun.
If you’re into surfing the Mamanucas have some of Fiji’s greatest (and most challenging) surf breaks, a couple of which are world famous. Cloudbreak, is home to an annual Pro Competition that attracts the best in the world. It’s a short boat ride from Tavarua Island, so too is Restaurants break while Wilkes Passage is accessible from Plantation Island.
